Science, the word comes from the Latin word “scientia” which means knowledge. Science in the broadest terms refers to any kind of systematic knowledge or practice. In other words, Science refers to the system of acquiring knowledge based on scientific method, as well as to the organized body of knowledge gained through such research.
Science can broadly be divided into two major categories:
- Natural Sciences
- Social Sciences
Natural Sciences refer to study of universe and nature. It is a rational approach to the study, which is understood by obeying the rules and laws of the nature. The various disciplines of Natural Sciences are Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and some cross disciplines like astrophysics, geophysics, physical chemistry, biophysics, biochemistry, geochemistry, astrochemistry, etc.
Social Sciences on other hand refer to group of academic disciplines that study human aspects of the world. Social Science should not be confused with Arts and Humanities because social sciences tend to emphasize the use of the scientific method in the study of humanity, including quantitative and qualitative methods. The various disciplines of Social Sciences are Anthropology, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Sociobiology, etc.
Apart from Natural and Social Sciences there is yet another form of science which is called “Formal Sciences”. It includes Mathematics, Statistics and Logic. Formal Sciences has features of both Natural and Social Sciences.
